Frida Kahlo: Life & Style Lessons from a Diva

I viewed the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Salt Lake public library this last week. I've seen the movie & applaud Salma Hayek for her performance. The movie is totally hot, sad and inspiring. (Sometime I’ll share with you how this movie inspired a new vision for my body).

I love Frida. I don't love her work. It's sad, grotesque and painful to view. In many of the photographs I could clearly see that she was in pain or very ill. Her perseverance of living in a badly traumatized body is a testament to her greatness in itself.

At the exhibit, which was small but well done, I saw new photographs of Frida I hadn't seen before. I saw how small and how large she really was. Frida was her own rock star, trendsetter, inspiration and her own brand. Her influence continues to grow long after her life.

Compared to Diego Rivera, she was extremely petite. Her mother commented that her marriage to Diego was the marriage of a “dove and an elephant." Although petite, Frida was massive in her creativity and voice. (If you don’t know her story, please take a glimpse of her life by viewing the film. Powerful women of the early 20th century are rare and worthy of study).

Frida brought her own style into everything she did: her home, art, expression and fashion revealed a completely unique and influential style.

My sense is that trendsetting, powerful women always tell their truth.

While living in America for four years she was the first worldly woman of her time to wear traditional Mexican clothing while she supported and promoted traditional Mexican art forms towards their eventual economic development. She completely stood out, owned her heritage and expressed her longing for home and her views about what was true for her.

The exhibit mentioned that every time Frida dressed it was a ceremony to behold. I couldn’t get over that.

How many of us, when we dress, experience a holy ritual?

My question is: Do we understand how sacred we are? Do we understand how sacred each day is?
I’ve had the experience many times of a "sacred" creative expression of pulling together an outfit in a completely original way. It happens when I am alone and allow myself to play with my creative tools of image. It is, as Seth Godin puts it, my Super Power. I create art on people and myself. The experience is magic, fulfilling and completely personal. It doesn’t matter whether I share this act of creation right then or later, but it is an experience of personal power.

Frida wove flowers into her hair in braids like a crown across her head. The exhibit said she was "a woman of singular beauty.” I am refreshed by the beauty of many women like her (Sarah Jessica Parker comes to mind). I honor the people (men and women alike) who understand their singular beauty whether or not the world thinks so. Screw the world. We are completely and utterly beautiful. (Especially when we express our essence instead of hiding!) Frida got that.

Thank you, Frida, (and the Salt Lake Public Library) for the lessons of your life. Despite tremendous personal pain, the joy of (the creative) life is about expressing who you are powerfully, truthfully, personally and making every action of your day an artistic expression.

5 fashion no no's I see all the time+ MAGIC SHOPPING

Hi Sexy Sweethearts*
It's my favorite time of year and one of my busiest seasons. I have a MAGIC CLIENT VIDEO HERE if you're in a hurry. If not, read my fashion words to the wise and then catch the video below!
Fall is a wonderful time to shift into clothing that can feel more comfortable and stylish. Unfortunately there are many new trends out there RIGHT NOW that look really bad if you don't know how to wear them (like trapeze tops and light blue jeans). Many trends should never be considered because they are a terrible idea in the first place! If it looks bad to you, it probably is! Trust your instincts.
I'm a classic stylist. I love clothing that is fresh and stylish but also stands the test of time in quality, design and flatter-appeal. I have pieces in storage that will come out again because they are classic standards. Let me help you navigate new fashion styles by showing you what works best for your body type and personal style.
Often what trips people up is failing to understand their body proportions. One of my clients kept purchasing tops that hit her at her widest point and made her look easily 20# over her fit weight. I won't be able to tell you what's right for you without seeing you but many people cut themselves off or add weight in the wrong section of their body.
You may have heard me bitch about capri pants on men and women. Cutting the leg line is the classic faux pas for ruining a long, lean look. Keep those jeans long, skimming your curves, dark and with something near 5% stretch. If you're going to chop the leg line, do it at the knee with shorts or cut-offs, just above or just below the knee~whichever is more flattering. (Here's a bit more on jeans and pants.)
For skirts, if you have a small waist and larger hips, grab a few fuller 50's skirts now and the always classic A-line. If you're thicker in the middle and slim in the hips, pencil skirts are always sexy and they do work on all body types. Avoid long, ankle length skirts unless you are taller than 5'5" and willing to wear a taller heel. I MEAN IT! Look for comfy, easy care fabric. To look gorgeous around your face, grab some gorgeous scarves in your best colors. You can't go wrong with turquoise and coral.
Men, make sure your jeans are slim (not skinny), dark wash, and have some stretch too. DO NOT WEAR JEANS THAT ARE SAGGING OR TOO BIG. Highlight your style with your shirts and jackets and try to choose blue every time over black, especially near your face. Yeah, those sparkly, bling~y shirts and jeans are out. You probably didn't like them anyway!
Light blue or white jeans are great but only if you know how to style them!

One 3 hour session with me in your closet or shopping can take care of an entire season of WHAT TO WEAR! Choose easy. Let me do it!

I wanted to share a video example of the miracles I create with my clients.
This particular client HATES SHOPPING! She thinks it's a big, fat, waste of time! She'd rather be out surfing, dancing or riding her bike in the mountains.
How do I work with clients who have so much else they would prefer doing?
Verrry strategically!!
I shop for you without you having to go shopping at all! Personal shopper and stylist go hand in hand. I bring the "fresh catch" to your home or office where you try them on in comfort and I return items that didn't work, if any!
Save time & save money for greater joys in your life. Let me style you!
My clients are busy, successful, normal folks who'd prefer to look great without trying. Choose smart and fun. Skip the dread. Hire me instead!

Why I didn't go to the Farmer's Market this morning

Brett loves for me to go places with him. It's his love language...along with "acts of service", "gifts" and certain sexual practices where I'm doing all the work.  He bounces right out of sleep to "do you want to go to the Farmer's Market with me?" Peeling an eyelid open I realize that I have spent the night and I have no clothes.

This represents a serious dilemma for me. As one knows, I am a STYLISSST. That means that I cannot go to the hippest, hottest, coolest thing happening in Salt Lake on a Saturday in dorky 5 year old stretchy palazzo capri pant thingies (now relegated to pj's) and no makeup.  I could, but I know that my magnetic personality would draw every hot & happening soul and I would be standing there, smiling, feeling vewwwy uncomfortable.  Because...as one knows....I am a stylissst. There are expectations I have to meet.

Most of my tribe looks to me for chic-ness. When prepared, I really do put on a show. I have Italian hats at home that LIVE for the Farmer's Market. (I am capitalizing the market here to show respect)  I have sundresses that swoon, that flow languidly over my curves, just to meet the gaze of admiring khaki shorts. I am on stage.

That's the problem. I am always on stage. Not intentionally, mind you. When all I do is coach others to show up radiant and large and gorgeous and taking the world by the balls it does startle them to see me at home after I've spent a day on the couch blogging in my pajamas. Gorgeous is not the word.

Rumpled would be the word.

I really do believe that one should show up in the world TRUEly which means clearly expressing the quirks of one's character and/or the fabulousness of one's gams (see @Cheryl Merz).  It's Style Integrity. And the Farmer's Market is the IDEAL spot to shine it, baby. Every conscious, sexy soul is out with their pet accessory (see @Godfrey the Goat via @Tara Starling) as the shining star they are. And I am a shining star. And I cannot shine if I do not have my tools.  I could shine in my pajamas but it would confuse people because they would be thinking..."Uh, isn't she a stylist? She must be drunk this morning."

So I am shining my *starlight* with you...here...remotely to the Style Carnival we call the Farmer's Market where all of you are all dolled up with your recyclable bags, milling about in caffeinated wonder about to run into 50 people you know, 4 of which you didn't want to see (with their new boyfriend/girlfriend) and just barely running out of cash because you found a pair of earrings that you thought, "ooohh...Auretha would love these."
